Club Resort & Business recently published the first of an interesting two-part article titled "Ready, Set, Go" that discussed the importance of a carefully considered plan of action in order to achieve first-rate results for golf course renovation or restoration projects.
"Whether a golf course renovation project involves a comprehensive renovation of an entire course (or two), restoring a property to its past grandeur, or overhauling a specific golf course feature such as bunkering, properties need to invest months of sweat equity—as well as commitments for needed capital and management/member support—into the tasks at hand. Otherwise, the final results have little chance of success. But of all of the needed components for a proper result, perhaps the most critical hinges on research and input from the property’s golf course maintenance team, to help devise a well-planned course of action from the start." Despite the course and agronomy focus of this article, I saw a lot of parallels to an article authored by RCS president Whitney Reid Pennell for the RCS Leadership Lounge in July last year called "Is the Design of your Club Costing You?". The focus of this article was on renovations that focus on service, food and beverage, and special events--all hugely important elements to a successful Club operation.
In it, Whitney broke down four different possible scenarios (complete with spreadsheets!) of how a poorly planned renovation--one that did not take operations into account when crafting that carefully considered plan of action--can be costing you.
